SEMO-NASV will be hosting The CAPE Conference on October 16-17, that will be held at Dempster Hall at Southeast Missouri State University.  Confirmed speakers are:

Victor Vieth is the Director of the National Child Protection Training Center at Winona State University, which provides training and technical assistance on dependancy, neglect, and termination of parental rights in child abuse cases, and merged with the National Association to Prevent Sexual Abuse of Children in 2007.  Mr. Vieth is also the author of "Unto the Third Generation:  A Call to End Child Abuse in the United States Within 120 Years," which was published in the Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment and Trauma in 2005.  http://sapn.nonprofitoffice.com/

 

Detective Mike Johnson is considered an ambassador for child advocacy.  He is a founding member of the Colin County Children's Advocacy Center.  Detective Johnson was appointed to the National Board of Directors for the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) in 1998.  Detecitve Johnson has served on the Texas State Attorney General's Sex Offender Protocol Task Force and Senator Florence Shapiro's Blue Ribbon Committee to formulate the now instated "Ashley Laws."  http://www.detectivemike.com/

Dr. Leigh M. Baker, psychologist, consultant, expert witness, and author has specialized in the treatment of traumatized individuals, children, and their families for 20 years.  She is an expert in the area of sexual abuse and the evaluation and treatment of very young children.

Other speakers include:

Dr. Timothy Kutz:  Director of the Division of Child Protection, Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.  Dr. Kutz was chosen as the St. Louis Area Council on Child Abuse and Neglect Child Advocate of the year, 2006.  He is very involved in providing professional services to the St. Louis community, including:  Trauma Committee, Cardinal Glennon Hospital, Child Advocacy Committee, St. Louis University Department of Pediatrics, Child Fatality Review Committee, Advisory Board Missouri State SAFE/CARE Network

Dr. Mary Dudley:  The Chief Medical Examiner for the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office in Kansas City, MO.  Dr. Dudley is well-versed in the collection of forensic evidence and has developed protocols for forensic medical investigations in Missouri.

Lt. Joe Laramie: Lt. Laramie has been with the Glendale, MO police department for 20 years with more than 25 years of experience in child protection.  He has been assigned as the Program Director for the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force since 2001.

Ms. Kathy Blevins:  Ms. Blevins is a SAFE/CARE nurse examiner and SANE nurse for the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence in Cape Girardeau, MO.  She has performed over 3,000 SAFE/CARE medical exams and forensic interviews to children in Southeast Missouri who have been abused.  She has attended multiple conferences on the new state protocols of rape kits and Jane Doe laws and is looking forward to presenting this information to the Southeast Missouri Community.

If you are an advocate for children, and you can only attend one conference this year, this should be the conference you attend.  The Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence has chosen speakers from all over the United States to inform the Southeast Missouri Community on preventing child abuse and what to do when abuse happens to best protect children.

Pending Contact/Continuing Education Hours

• 14.5 POST hours of law enforcement continuing education (13-Interpersonal perspectives) through the Missouri POST Program.

• An application has been made for the conference to be considered for approval through the National Board for Certified Counselors for 13 clock hours (1.3 CEU's) for counselors.
  •  Counseling hours have been approved.

• This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers for 14.5 continuing education contact hours.
  •  Due to cost, social work hours will not be available.

• This continuing nursing education activity has been submitted for approval to the Missouri Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commision on Accreditation.

• The Cape Girardeau County Medical Society is accredited by the Missouri State Medical Association to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.  The Cape Girardeau County Area Medical Society designates this eduational activity for a maximum of 14.5 AMA PRA Category 1 credits.  Physicians should only claim commensurate with the extent of their participation in this activity.
  
  

**To receive continuing education hours, participants must attend both conference days and return the evaluation form before receiving the certificate of completion.

Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology will provide the venue, Dempster Hall, and folders for the conference.
